AN EXHIBITION RE-IMAGINING ELIZABETH DAVID’S KITCHENS 1951-1992 Stansted Park, West Sussex, from 8th September to 1st December 2024 ‘If I had to choose one woman this century who had brought about the greatest improvement in English life, my vote would go to Elizabeth David’ Auberon Waugh Opening alongside the inaugural South Downs Food Festival (14–15 September 2024), Stansted Park Foundation and the Elizabeth David Estate are bringing to life Elizabeth David’s working kitchen in the Edwardian kitchen at Stansted House. Through the installation of original furniture and cooking equipment used by David, visitors will imagine themselves at home with Britain’s greatest food writer and in the room in which she planned her ground-breaking cookery books and tested recipes on friends and family. David moved into to 24 Halsey Street, London, in 1951. For almost three decades her kitchen in a garden extension became a studio or laboratory for her work: food preparation, writing and socialising all took place there, at a rough pine table overlooked by dressers, cupboards and her trusty New World gas cooker. It will bring together food enthusiasts, chefs, food writers, campaigners and artisan producers for a weekend of gastronomic delights and stimulating talks. This inaugural festival will feature an array of food and drink from across the South Downs and beyond. Surrounded by the forests and parkland of the Stansted Park estate in the South Downs National Park, the festival will bring together a special curation of the finest Sussex and Hampshire produce, gourmet dishes, and locally brewed beverages. The festival will host a “street” of over 40 artisan producers, a ‘Stansted Arm’s Pub’, cookery demo tent, live music, wood-fired catering, picnics, chef’s table and Tea on the Terrace of the country house. London Gatwick appeals for Sussex charities to apply for funding.
Local charities and support organisations in Sussex are urged to apply for funding from the Gatwick Airport Community Trust which is now open again for applications. Around £250,000 will be made available to worthy causes across West and East Sussex, parts of Surrey and Kent. The deadline for community groups to apply to the Trust, which has been running for more than 20 years, is 31 March 2025. Last year The Gatwick Airport Community Trust, which is funded exclusively by London Gatwick, provided much-needed support for more than 100 charities and groups across the region. Funding available to community groups will be linked to passenger numbers during 2024 and the final amount available will be confirmed in 2025. Melanie Wrightson, stakeholder engagement manager at London Gatwick, said: “We’re looking forward to supporting local groups and charities again as we open our annual appeal for good causes throughout Sussex, Surrey and Kent to apply for funding from the Gatwick Airport Community Trust. “Since the Trust was established more than two decades ago it has been helping local groups to provide important services and we can’t wait to help more community groups next year too.” One of the previous recipients was Haywards […]
