Family Days Out in Sussex

Although Sussex is visibly divided into East and West Sussex, the county has a long history dating back to Saxon times as the Kingdom of Sussex.  Traditionally an area of strong local identity, the division goes back as far as the 12th century, and the areas are two different administrative counties.

As well as miles of beautiful coastline from Hastings, Bexhill, Eastbourne, Seaford, Brighton, Shoreham-by-Sea, Worthing, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis, Sussex has tourist sites galore meaning that wherever in Sussex you are, there are plenty of ways to spend the holidays and make the most of the British countryside, in fair weather or foul.  Here is a selection:

Arundel Wetland Centre
Set with ancient woodland on the South Downs, Arundel offers 26 hectares of wetland habitat and naturalised landscape filled with wildfowl, water voles and kingfishers.  Attractions include a tree creeper play area, pond skater’s adventure, plus electric boat safaris

Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum
A beautiful Sussex estate offering a wildfowl reserve, ancient building trail, vintage car museum at Bentley House, plus tearooms, railway and play area

Blackberry Farm, Whitesmith
A working farm with friendly and well trained animals, plus large outdoor play area, café, undercover adventure playbarn, family fun picnic area and baby area

Brighton Sealife Centre
Part of the worlds oldest aquarium, the Sealife centre is a carefully tended display of exotic and local marine life, set out in interesting, educational and attractive displays.  The centre offers an interactive rock pool, sharks, seahorses, turtles and rays, and displays including Submarine Adventure and Shark Reef Bay

Fishers Farm Park, Wisborough Green
A unique mixture of farm animals and adventure play.  The park has a toboggan run, animal theatre show, play area and more

Wilderness Wood, Hadlow Down
Wilderness Wood is a family run sustainable woodland in the Sussex Weald.  Bluebell trail, coppicing lessons, annual woodland events

Hastings and Battle 1066 Country
A variety of historical interest and natural history sites, from the Roman and Norman landing sites at Pevensey to Battle, the site of the notorious Battle of Hastings

Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre, Amberley
A 36 acre open site devoted to the industrial heritage of the south east.  Exhibits range from a print workshop to a bus collection and there are also a variety of traditional craftsmen on site.

Bignor Roman Village, Pulborough
Bignor is the site of the remains of a Roman home with mosaic floors discovered in 1811.  With a farm, tearoom, and stunning walks, there are also year round events

Bodiam Castle, Near Robertsbridge
A beautiful National Trust site, the castle was built in 1385, and is an excellent example of its type, as the exterior is virtually complete.  The castles interior is also partly in tact, and historical interpreters will guide your visit (seasonal) to ensure the family get the best from the experience

The Kent and East Sussex Railway
A rural light railway stretching from Tenterden to Bodiam Castle.  Opened in 1900, the railway now operates as a charity, and has a restaurant, gift shop and variety of events

Look and Sea Heritage Centre, Littlehampton
Focused on the history of the River Arun, harbour and seaside of Littlehampton, the heritage centre has interactive exhibits, artefacts and a viewing tower with a 360 degree view, plus the Harbour Lights Café

Weald and Downland Open Air Museum
A fascinating collection of historical buildings dating back as far as the 13th century set n 401 acres of Sussex countryside
